Winners of the Gmund Awards 2017
The best natural paper printers of 2017 were honored in a festive ceremony at Gmund Paper Mill on November 9, 2017.
The winners received their awards from Gmund Paper’s owner Florian Kohler on stage in front of an audience of almost 400 guests.
The winners in six categories were chosen by a jury of eight external and internal experts from the industry.
The first-place award in Paper Art went to Buch- und Offsetdruckerei Heenemann in Berlin, which had submitted a magazine comprising an interplay of various processing techniques. Hot foil, blind embossing and UV lacquer processes were used on dark paper.
Tipografia Altedo from Italy won top honors in the category of Corporate Design. The jurors were impressed by the packaging, for which hot foil and microengraving were used. Manually assembled and equipped with a magnet, the package conceals the graceful design inside it to create a delightfully surprising effect.
First prize in the new category of Design was awarded to Knopp Design from Birenbach. A brochure embellished with hot-foil and blind embossing, and bound with manual stitching, was the jury’s favorite submission in this category.
Eberl Print from Immenstadt defeated its competitors in the category of Packaging. The paper was ribbed and stamped to complement the digital printing process, and the banderole was personalized. The overall concept of the packaging made the decisive difference.
Tipografia Altedo from Italy created a universe in Gmund Colors Matt to win the award in the category of Paper Art. Hot foil, laser cutting and laser engraving were used in the processing of four different papers in diverse grammages and colors.
The invitation card from Druck-Ring on Gmund Original is laminated, stamped, ribbed and adorned with blue sealing wax. This project earned the most points in the category of Private Communication for the printers from Kirchheim.
During their session, the jurors spontaneously decided to also award a special Youth prize. This year’s winner was 14-year-old Emmi Böhm, who has dedicated herself to the worthy cause of protecting the oceans – a mission that harmonizes well with Gmund Paper’s philosophy of sustainability. “I created this notebook to raise people’s awareness about the importance of protecting the oceans. I minimized the book’s consumption of water and energy by making the inner part of the notebook from waste paper.” Five euros from the token fee charged for each book will be donated to Sea Shepherd. Forty books will be sold exclusively at the Sea Shepherd Shop in Amsterdam.
Bayern-3 moderator Simone Faust emceed the festive evening this year. After the official part of the program was over, the guests nibbled finger food and sipped drinks in front of the company’s building at the first Design Streetfood Festival by the shores of Lake Tegernsee. Afterwards, a DJ in the lounge provided the musical background for a relaxing and enjoyable evening.
The “Best Natural Paper Printers” awards celebrated their fourth anniversary in 2017. Over 1,000 items have been submitted during the past years. The steadily growing number of submissions and the participants’ enthusiasm prove that this award has firmly established itself in the industry. We’re already looking forward to the entrants and the winners in 2018!
