New memory technology 1000 times faster
3D XPoint is a new type of permanent computer memory (which saves data even if the computer is turned off). Machines, applications and services which require a lot of data can become significantly faster. It is the first really new memory type since the introduction of the NAND flash memory in 1989.
There are in fact two types of computer memory. The standard memory which most computers have (SDRAM) is very fast but the disadvantage is that data is deleted when the computer is turned off. The other type is permanent memory. This memory keeps the data when the computer is turned off, but has up to now been significantly slower than SDRAM. This type of memory is used in USB drives, memory cards, mobile phones, tablets and SSDs (Solid State Disks). The 3D XPoint developed by Intel and Micron makes it possible for data chips to not only hold on to the data when the appliance is turned off, but be very fast at the same time.
