Bike lane made from recycled toilet paper
World´s first bike path made from recycled toilet paper has been constructed between Leeuwarden en Stiens (Friesland, the Netherlands). 180,000 tonnes of toilet paper is flushed down the loo yearly in the Netherlands. Waterschap Friesland (regulatory body for water in the province of Friesland), Stowa, civil engineers Jansma en Roelofs, Esha Infra Solutions and KNN Cellulose worked together to give this toilet paper a second life. The consortium reclaims paper fibre from waste water and transforms it into asphalt. This form of recycling is unique, according to the consortium. Michiel Schrier from the province of Friesland says: ” This is an important step for the province of Friesland in the sustainability of road construction.”
