Eosta: laser printing fruit and veg
You will undoubtedly know the packaging and stickers to indicate if fruit and veg are organic. A Dutch supplier of organic fruit and veg, Eosta, has found a more environmentally friendly way to show this: laser printing. The outer layer of the skin gets a laser printed logo or text. The fruit or vegetable goes through a machine equipped with lasers which burn away a small bit of colour (pigment) so a clear “print” appears. This natural branding (see also this video) uses only a fraction of the energy needed for the making and printing of stickers and it saves a lot of (plastic) materials. Swedish supermarket chain ICA is the first customer to sell the laser printed organic products.
