WhatsApp beats paper mail
There are plans to reduce the number of days for postal services and increase the costs. To keep postal services affordable and regular measures have to be taken before long, according to Henk Kamp (Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs).
The postal market is decreasing fast because communication is more and more digital, according to Kamp. He refers to the most recent research in the postal market done for Economic Affairs. Kamp: “The postman´s bag and the postboxes are increasingly empty, whilst the service continues to be of the highest level. Digitisation is continuing and that forces us to review the postal market quickly.”
Research shows that WhatsApp is the most popular communication tool, followed by mobile calls and email. Post is only in 6th place. 62% of respondents said communicating via post is cumbersome, whilst in 2011 52% thought it was easy.
Compared to five years ago Dutch companies and consumers sent 35% less letters and packages. This is still 2.9 million pieces for the most part business mail.
