callas software showcases pdfToolbox 9 at drupa 2016
Innovations in Print
callas will launch pdfToolbox 9 offering powerful, dynamic and easy to integrate PDF processing, from quick visual inspection and fixing to fully unattended processing of thousands of files. What’s new in pdfToolbox 9? pdfToolbox was the first product introducing variables into PDF preflight and correction more than seven years ago; and this powerful feature is nowadays one of the indispensable ingredients of modern Prepress workflows worldwide. pdfToolbox 9 does now introduce even more flexibility by extending this feature to cover wider areas and to allow for dynamically changing variable values during processing. Other prepress innovations allow for automatically creating background objects, e.g. for printing on transparent material or are related to new developments such as CxF for spectral data in PDF files. Using rock-solid Adobe technology pdfToolbox provides checking and fixing of even very complex problems, color management, impositioning, conversion to and from PDF and more. pdfToolbox technology is used by small companies, large publishers and print providers as well as OEMs that integrate the technology into their own solutions.
pdfChip is a command-line application for the creation of high-quality PDF from HTML (taking full advantage of CSS and JavaScript). The new version shown at drupa features an Adobe InDesign script to quickly create the required HTML templates from InDesign. An intelligent invoice module enables direct implementation of invoice generation; the invoice template can be designed either in HTML or in Adobe InDesign. pdfChip supports all HTML features, but extends them to support requirements of premedia and output processe like CMYK, spot color, page numbers, table of content generation, XMP metadata, PDF standards, SVG, MathML, barcodes and more. Capable of generating single and multi-page PDF documents it is ideally suited for high-volume dynamic PDF generation.
pdfaPilot is the solution for conversion of PDF or native documents and emails into robust, searchable PDF or PDF/A files for long-term archiving. It uses the same rock-solid PDF/A technology as used in Adobe Acrobat and is available for desktop use, through watched folders or ready for integration into existing systems through a command line interface or software development kit.
The tablet market has not only stalled, but will be 100 million pieces smaller than expected, according to the latest predictions. Reason is, according to research by Gartner and IDC, mostly the rise of smartphones with larger screens. Growth will continue, according to recode.net, because a large percentage of laptop users will want to replace their laptop with a tablet with keyboard cover.
The new numbers support the trend which experts call the revival of paper and which will lead to multi channel publishing. The medium will be chosen for cost, effectiveness and what the reader really wants, rather than the next tech-hype.

Half-format, 52x72cm, offset presses with automatic features such as plate change and ink key settings seem to be stealing the show at drupa. With production speed of about 15,000 printers per hour and order changing of under 10 minutes these are competition for digital printers which have a higher production costs and are less productive with speeds of about 6,000 prints per hour. Manufacturers such as Heidelberg, Manroland, Komori and KBA are clearly focused on this market segment where turnover and margin growth can still be realised by increased productivity. An example of this trend is the new KBA Rapida 75 Pro which, with characteristics from the bigger Rapidas and a console with a TouchTronic interface, at drupa shows what the new generation half-format offset presses have to offer. More about the 75 Pro in the press release below.
Premiere at drupa as a five-colour press with coater and LED-UV curing
KBA expands half-format offerings with new Rapida 75 PRO
KBA showcases an advancement of the Rapida 75 in half format with the unveiling of the Rapida 75 PRO at drupa. This new press closes the gap to the highly automated Rapida 76. The Rapida 75 PRO features the same hard- and software solutions as medium-format Rapidas and thus offers a raft of extra features and improved user-friendliness.
The Rapida 75 PRO moves even closer to the Rapida 105 and Rapida 106 in terms of its press design. The ErgoTronic console is a standard feature equipped with the TouchTronic graphical user interface. Job management (console) and press operation (delivery screen) are no longer separate.
New: TouchTronic GUI
The Rapida 75 PRO is operated via touchscreen. All of the press’ functions are controlled with a maximum of two touches of a button. It has a USB port for job data exchange with pre-press. The optional wall screen is also a new feature. It displays all press settings ranging from live pictures of the sheet travel up to monitoring print quality with QualiTronic ColorControl.
New: One-Button-Job-Change
Makeready times can be cut by up to 50 per cent with One-Button-Job-Change. All pre-selected makeready processes are carried out at the touch of a button in an optimised sequence according to time. Job and press settings can be loaded at the ErgoTronic console during production. This programme for job changing makes operating the press easier and reduces makeready times further. Intuitive graphical user interfaces contribute to fast job preparation. Here are the most important functions at a glance:
- – Loading of CIP3 data via CIPLink X or LogoTronic Professional
- – Storing press parameters for repeat jobs
- – Complete production data acquisition via LogoTronic Professional
- – Remote register control
- – Control of peripherals
- – Maintenance indicator / printing of maintenance lists
- – Creation and printing of pile dockets (via network printer)
- – Display of preview images.
New: More performance
Moreover, the Rapida 75 PRO has different performance data. Its standard print format has grown to 520 x 735mm (20.4 x 28.9in) (previously 510 x 735 mm/ 20 x 28.9in). Presses with up to eight inking units and coater produce at speeds of up to 15,00sph (previously 13,000sph) as standard. The high-speed package with speeds of up to 16,000sph remains the same, as do the special formats which deliver up to six pages in typical catalogue or US measurements.
The press configurations available extend up to ten-colour presses with an additional coater. Perfecting and coaters are also possible, e.g. for four-over-four or five-over-five production. They run at maximum speeds of up to 13,000sph. Double-coater presses are also available as an option.
New: ColorTronic ink ducts
The ColorTronic ink ducts found in the Rapida 75 PRO are identical to those found in medium- and large-format Rapidas. Just like the other Rapidas, the ink keys are 30mm wide (1.18in) and there are now 25 keys. Idle inking units can be uncoupled at the ErgoTronic console as an option. This means that the protective paste which prevents the rollers from running dry is not necessary and the inking unit does not need to be cleaned when used again. Distribution adjustment can also take place at the console.
New: More automation for plate changing
Semi-automatic plate changing is now a standard feature of the Rapida 75 PRO. Plate changing times for this model are around one minute per printing unit without the need for tools. Automatic plate changing is also available as an option. After placing the plates in the plate-loading cartridges, everything then happens automatically: Automatic plate changing relieves the operating crew of manual tasks and shortens makeready times further.
Many well-known features have stayed. These include a wide range of drying systems ranging from the energy-saving VariDryBLUE dryers up to HR-UV and LED-UV curing systems facilitating the immediate finishing of printed sheets. Key economical features of the Rapida 75 have also been adopted by the Rapida 75 PRO in terms of the space and energy needed. It requires a lot less space than other presses in its format class and operates with a lot less energy.
