Zünd to demonstrate productivity features at FESPA Digital
The Swiss manufacturer will present its latest high-performance, ultra-versatile digital cutting solutions for commercial printers and other print service providers. In conjunction with its modular flatbed cutters, Zünd will exhibit automation and productivity features for every application and production environment.
With these latest automation solutions, the company has further perfected its range of modular, adaptable material-handling options available for both material loading and off-loading. One of the highlights is the new collaborative robot being shown as part of an S3 M-800 fully automated cutting configuration.
The integrated robotic off-load system automatically picks up cut parts from the machine and stacks them at predefined locations. The robot is designed to operate autonomously in production environments in which the human operator and robotic device are working together to accomplish a task.
This fully automated production workflow also involves automatic job retrieval via QR-code. The integrated camera system captures the QR-code printed with each job, which enables Zünd Cut Center – ZCC to automatically retrieve the matching cut file.
In addition, the ZCC system automatically determines the exact location and orientation of the graphics. In case of distortions in material or print, it automatically makes adjustments to the cut path for a perfect match between cut and print.
ARC automates bit changes
With the new Automatic Router Bit Changer – ARC, Zünd highlights yet another automation solution. The ARC system comes with a freely configurable magazine that holds up to 8 router bits. During processing, the ARC automatically selects the correct bit for the material and task at hand.
This automation feature reduces setup times to a minimum and significantly enhances process reliability. The ARC is ideal for efficiently routing, polishing, and engraving applications involving aluminum, wood, plastics, or composites.
Distortion-free advancing with center winder
Attendees can also see a Zünd G3 3XL-1600 cutting system in action. This high-performance cutting configuration is especially well suited for wide-format finishing of graphics on vinyl and other rolled materials up to 3.21 m / 10 ft wide. The center-winder roll-off with integrated dancer system guarantees optimal tension control that allows for wrinkle- and distortion-free processing of textiles.
Tandem operation for unsurpassed productivity
Especially when it comes to material loading and unloading, Zünd has put a great deal of efforts into not just supporting but enhancing the already remarkable productivity of its cutting systems.
A perfect example is the option to equip Zünd cutters with a tandem operating setup. In this configuration, the cutter surface is essentially divided into two independently controllable working areas.
Material loading/unloading and processing occur concurrently on alternate sides of the machine, allowing for completely uninterrupted production. This setup is indispensable in production scenarios where every second count, e.g. for efficiently and economically completing last-minute orders with tight delivery schedules.
Zünd will be showing its latest modular flatbed cutters and finishing solutions in Hall 1, Stand G90 at FESPA Digital 2016, from 8-11 March at Rai Amsterdam.

Mimaki launches new TS500P-3200 inkjet printer
Mimaki is to launch the super-wide format TS500P-3200 inkjet printer come February 2016. This 3.2-m wide roll-to-roll sublimation inkjet printer is a dedicated transfer paper printer for the textile industry and is ideal for a broad range of applications including home furnishing textiles and indoor soft signage.
Tailored for the growing close-to-home personalisation trend
“On-demand inkjet printing systems are increasingly being used for clothing production instead of conventional analogue systems because of their ability to quickly provide high-mix, low-volume printing,” states Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA at Mimaki Europe.
“It started with the fashion industry putting the benefits of on demand digital printing to good use for tailored and variable print quantities. We see the trend expanding now to interior decoration and home styling.”
“Moreover, the change is not limited to the production method, but also to production location. Production sites get shifted from low-cost remote locations to urban areas closer to consumers. We believe this trend will extend to the production of extra-wide textiles for home furnishings from curtains to upholstery and bed linens. Personalisation and delayed delivery do not mix well.”
Lean, mean and green
The super-wide format TS500P-3200 inkjet printer, ideal for printing on such fabrics, features a new type of printhead to deliver high-speed printing at 180 m2/h.
There are 12 printheads arrayed in three staggered lines that eject ink droplets at high speed to maintain the appropriate ink droplet angle and ensure accurate drop placement with a high head gap. This ensures high-quality printing results on low-cost thin transfer papers.
Mimaki’s Advanced Pass System 4 (MAPS4) anti-banding function smooths the swath boundaries with reduced numbers of droplets to provide even more beautiful printing. In addition, the newly designed Auto Media Feeder (AMF) allows stable transfer paper feeding at the high-speed setting in order to maintain print quality.
In addition, the environmentally friendly output does not emit volatile organic compounds after printing and helps reduce CO2 emissions during transportation because it is lightweight and foldable.
Performance technologies support market innovation
The Mimaki TS500P-3200 delivers a number of production benefits:
- 3.2m super-wide printable width is practical for sublimation transfer printing on extra-wide fabrics for curtains, bed linens, and other home furnishings
- printing speed of 180 m2/h for high productivity
- new print head and feeding mechanism ensure high speed and quality printing on 3.2m wide media
- AMF is capable of feeding media up to 3.2m wide and of 130kg and can maintain stable feeding to achieve high-quality printing
- cockling-reduction transfer mechanism supports high-speed production on wide papers
- high-performance RIP software TxLink3 Lite to specify the ink volume per colour, and produce large seamless patterns from a single image (including repeat and mirror patterns)
Uninterrupted printing is aided by the Nozzle Check Unit (NCU) that automatically detects and cleans clogged nozzles while the Nozzle Recovery System (NRS) uses only good nozzles as substitutes, when the clogged nozzles are not recovered after cleaning. Large ink containers in the external ink supply unit support continuous printing.
Dream big and wide
The interior decoration market is a growing one, as Horsten concludes: “Demand for indoor fabric signage is increasing as compared with PVC solvent printing. This is in part due to its flexible production that allows designs to be highly creative and responsive to fashions, trends and demands.”
“Mimaki is thrilled to be able to deliver the solution to meet the request of this market. You cannot put a stop on imagination, this solution ensures you don’t have to stop printing it.”
Mimaki is likely to throw a strong focus on textiles, with a full portfolio of products, at this year’s FESPA show in Amsterdam, from 8-11 March at Rai Amsterdam.

CIELab can define and store any colour. But colour is more, it evokes emotions, colours combine and resonate with other colours and colours are interpreted differently in different cultures. Color Passport endeavours to code all specifics of one colour so that the user, from designer to printer, knows more about colour and the transformation to a different printing technique, country or culture becomes a lot simpler.
Color Passport has done this for 7810 colours based on the CIELab 1976 standard. If you would like to know more about Color Passport, visit the Color Passport website.
