In the past Adobe resolved the 2D stepping problem for photo imagers with the raster image processors and software such as Illustrator. The company will now resolve the same problem for 3D printers. The problem arises when layering the filaments during fused deposition modeling (FDM). Adobe has found a way to solve this problem and has filed a patent for it. The first 3D printers equipped with this software are expected to be introduced this year. Adobe has more irons in the fire for the 3D growth market, such as the newest version of Photoshop which has been optimized for 3D design. As part of its commitment to education and knowledge sharing, FESPA has introduced a new series of technical guides which are available free of charge for members of FESPA’s national associations.
Two sets of guides are now available covering Colour Management and Pre-Production Data Management, with more sets being rolled out during the year.
Each set includes an introductory overview, two information specific guides, as well as a frequently asked questions document. The guides, which are funded through FESPA’s Profit for Purpose programme, are free-of-charge for members of FESPA’s associations and will be available digitally to download.
Sean Holt, General Secretary, FESPA, comments: “FESPA is always looking for new ways to add value for members of our associations. In this rapidly developing industry, we know it is time consuming for printers to stay up to date with developments, and costly to obtain vendor-neutral information. Our technology guides will provide expert technical guidance on topics relevant to all wide format and speciality print businesses.”
The technology guides are just one of the educational benefits available to members of FESPA associations. Other recent educational initiatives funded through FESPA’s Profit for Purpose programme include onsite conferences at FESPA events in Europe, China, Africa and Eurasia, the launch of the Printeriors Conference, as well as four regional congresses in the Nordic region, Southern Europe, Mexico and Africa. In 2014 FESPA hosted two Digital Textile Conferences in Italy and Turkey and re-launched FESPA’s Planet Friendly Guides, which are now accessible in 11 individually tailored guides.

Facebook sees a role for itself in the business market. During its annual developers conference F8 Facebook announced a few new tools to do this with. The most important one is undoubtedly the Messenger Platform with which it is possible to develop apps to reach the 600 million Facebook accounts. Also LiveRail a tool to share videos is expanding, it can now be used to distribute adverts. This makes Facebook a competitor to Google´s DoubleClick and Twitter´s MoPub. How Facebook users react to ads is already known, most don´t like it. But now that apps for Facebook are increasingly popular developers and their customers want to know how to develop and use these. For this purpose Facebook has made available Analystics for Apps, a free tool which allows you to measure the use and functionality of apps. We will have to see if Facebook is able to conquer the professional and business market, especially seeing the competition from Google, LinkedIn and Twitter, and also from Microsoft and Apple/IBM. However, based on the huge amount of users they are very likely to at least get a part of the market, if only because there are so many solopreneurs and small companies already on Facebook.

When you combine expertise in variable data and reprographics focused on labels and packaging and you are one of the first to invest in a Screen Truepress Jet L350UV digital label press you can offer Labels on Demand just like Springfield Solutions in the UK. Labels on Demand is one of the growth markets in which the bigger brands ask for smaller quantities with shorter delivery times.
Short turnaround is possible with the Screen Truepress Jet L350UV which has a speed of 50 metres a minute and a width of 350mm. And with a perfect print quality in full colour and high opacity white even the most demanding orders can be delivered without any issues. The choice of Screen Springfield was the end of a two year long search for the perfect digital label press. Crucial was the good experience Springfield already had with Screen and, according to Operations Director Dennis Ebeltoft, the best combination of speed and quality.
