Not so long ago common knowledge was that smaller quantities were less expensive to produce digitally. However, it appears that also larger quantities of labels are more economic than conventional techniques.
One example is a 70×155 mm label printed on the Screen Truepress Jet L350UV.
Very detailed calculations show that the break even point between flexo and Screen inkjet is at 115,000 for this type of label, 4551 running metres.
Because of the fact that many labels are printed in significantly smaller quantities, Screen invites everyone involved in the purchase and production of labels, to have a look at the calculations. Screen´s Wim Koning will send you the calculations upon request. Mail him at wim.koning@screeneurope.com

Xerox brings a metallic silver toner to market which enables the Xerox printers Colour 800i/1000i to print silver also at high speed. The metallic gold and silver toners which adhere to the Pantone specifications, can enhance prints. Because of the silver and gold toners the prints appear to have a metallic shine which has a high flop index, the measurement on the change in reflectance of a metallic colour. Printing with gold and silver toners gives the prints a foil stamp like appearance. Xerox hopes that clients will use gold and silver toners for digital printing work such as business cards, invitations and official documents.

Japanese printing manufacturer Brother has acquired Domino. Domino specializes in fast industrial printers for coding and marking. It seems that Brother with its digital plans and worldwide service and distribution organization is the ideal partner for Domino. Domino has been able to withstand the pressure of digital printers with variable data possibilities. Industrial printing for packaging and direct mail is a growth market which is now accessible for Brother through this take over.

Endlessly waiting for your 3D print to complete will no longer be necessary. Carbon3D has developed a technique to make 3D printing a 100 times faster. Carbon3D does not print layer by layer. Their Continous Liquid Interface Production technique – CLIP for short – uses oxygen and light to selectively cure the material. The printed object is drawn from a resin bath. The lower part of this bath contains a material that is best compared to a soft contact lens: it is permeable to UV light and oxygen. Where the resin is exposed to oxygen, it will not harden; where there is no exposure to oxygen the resin will be cured with UV light. The Carbon3D technology makes it possible to measure the oxygen very precisely, as small as a few dozen micron, say two or three blood cells together.
There are numerous advantages to this technology. Smaller details mean a smoother surface. The smaller details also result in stronger objects. And it is much faster as well. Carbon3D still needs to make production ready equipment to make their promises a reality. To this end it has attracted a total of 41 million dollars in investments from famous investors such as Sequoia Capital and Silver Lake Kraftwerk. Carbon3D has produced prototypes for a feasibility study. In the below accelerated video Carbon3D demonstrates their technology. In reality the CLIP process would need 6,5 minutes to print the object. Other 3D technology would take 3 hours for the same result.

Fogra ProcessStandard Digital Handbook: stap voor stap naar een voorspelbaar digital print resultaat

In 2014 Fogra published a handbook in which step by step helps digital printers to get an expected result. The handbook which you can download from the Blokboek.com download page is expected to be the basis of the ISO 15311, the digital equivalant of the ISO 12647-x for traditional printing techniques. There is still a lot of work to be done by the Fogra Digital Working Group and the ISO TC130 WG3 working group. In the meantime the handbook is a good guide for any company wanting to standardize its digital print production. Controlling the output process, but also the reproduction of colour and how to realize a PDEF/-X compatible workflow are all explained in the guide. A must read!

With all the noise about production inkjet marketing one could easily forget that offset is still very much alive. Make ready times and make ready sheets can be decreased by press automation. Automation also guarantees a predictable result with much less waste paper. Kliemo in Eupen, Belgium, proves this with their investment in the Speedmaster XL 106-10P equipped with the new Prinect Inpress Control 2 system. Thanks to press automation this printer has been able to cut waste paper by up to 50 sheets per set up, according to print manager Ralph Rodtheut. Automated inline measuring has made very fast work of setting up of many of their jobs. The Prinect option not only automates colour management, but also takes care of the perfect register and controls dot gain during the entire run. Fortunately investing in automated pre-press workflow has become the norm for any graphics company and investing in press automation is the next step. Heidelberg, KBA, Manroland, Komori and Ryobi regularly report this. Press automation will keep offset young for at least another 10 years.
