Landa is niet het enige bedrijf dat nanotechniek voor onze industrie inzet. Papierfabrikant Sappi gaat in Sittard-Geleen zijn met de Edinburgh Napier University ontwikkelde nanocellulose techniek uittesten. De testfabriek komt op de Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen (zie foto) waar veel onderzoek gedaan wordt naar chemie en materialen op biobasis. Nanocellulose wordt gemaakt van ‘gewone’ houtvezels en heeft unieke optische en sterkte eigenschappen. Het productieproces voor nanocellulose is ook nog milieuvriendelijker dan traditionele processen omdat het benodigde water minder vervuild is. Paper producer Sappi will start testing their nanocellulose technology in Sittard-Geleen. The technology was developed together with the Edinburgh Napier University. The pilot plant will be located at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus (picture) in Geleen, the Netherlands, where research and development into bio based chemicals and materials are performed.
Nanocellulose is made from ´normal´ wood fibers and has unique optical and strength properties. The production process for nanocellulose is more environmentally friendly than traditional processes with less chemical wasted water. An antique Heidelberg letter press will print in Koog aan de Zaan using wind power. You are welcome to see this little graphic miracle up until 9 May, between 11.00 and 16.00, if there is enough wind, of course.

In honour of the 150th anniversary of Van Dale, the Van Dale pocket dictionaries Dutch, English, French and German have received a festive look. A golden colour edged celebratory limited edition will be available from today.The pictures show how the books have been produced. Publisher Jaap Parqui: “I didn´t know it, but colour edging is done by spraying paint on the outside of the books. And for such a large edition! It is always exciting to see if books turn out as beautiful as intended by the designer. I would say: go and have a look in the shop. Even though in the end it is about the contents, the cover is also important!” Price per dictionary is € 9,99 for Dutch and € 10,99 for the other languages. American webshop Amazon has submitted a patent for what might become a ´mobile factory´: a truck which would print the product with a 3D printer en route to its customers. In other words, you order, the truck leaves for your address and during the trip the product is being printed using a 3D printer. Amazon wants to kill two birds with one stone, the client will have less waiting time and the web shop will have less storage space, because the product isn´t produced until it´s ordered. Amazon would send the data file to the 3D printer in the truck, after which the truck leaves for the customer. Especially relatively simple spare parts would be suitable, the web shop thinks.

The Grafische Groep Matthys (Turnhout, Belgium) recently won the international Invercote Award 2015 in the ´Best Design´ category for their exclusive luxury folding carton packaging for saffron. “This prize is a recognition for the special products made in Turnhout using the innovative in-line cold foil printing process.” Using this technique they make luxury graphics products for clients throughout Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and France, with a small number of clients in Germany and the United Kingdom.
The printers recently invested in a high quality cutter and complete folder/gluer for processing the remarkable folded carton packaging. The exclusive folding carton packaging for saffron was the entry for which the jury awarded the prize to Grafische Groep Matthys. The design department of the Turnhout printing company created the luxury packaging for its client ‘Golden Result Saffron’ in the Netherlands. It was produced on Invercote cardboard using the in-line cold foil printing process and given a soft-touch lacquer finish.
Iggesund and the Grafische Groep Matthys will be presenting it in De Monsterkamer in Amsterdam on Thursday 19 March. The prize winning saffron packaging will also be shown.
