07 aug 2017
Categorie: ,

Following its Biofore approach, UPM Paper ENA has reached the next significant milestone in the company’s sustainability journey, as now all its mills produce papers that are awarded with the EU Ecolabel. The UPM Hürth paper mill completed the full range on June 5th, when its products received the EU Ecolabel certificate. The mill achieved the needed reduction in emissions by switching to more sustainable sources of energy.

“Being able to provide our customers with EU Ecolabel awarded products from all of our mills is a great achievement, which we can be proud of,” says Päivi Rissanen, Sustainability Director, UPM Paper ENA. “The EU Ecolabel criteria covers all relevant environmental aspects and is a good proof of solid sustainability performance.”

The EU Ecolabel covers the product’s whole lifecycle, which makes it the broadest ecolabel available on the market. Showcasing the EU Ecolabel printed on a paper product is a reliable and widely recognized way for UPM customers to express their commitment to sustainability. UPM has had the most comprehensive offering of papers carrying the EU Ecolabel in the paper industry, with the recent addition further strengthening this position – the label is now available for over 200 UPM Paper ENA products.

All environmental and social responsibility certificates of UPM papers including mill-specific EU Ecolabel certificates can be found in the UPM Certificate Finder.

There will be a range of flexible mailing systems, from the entry level Mailmaster Compact C4/C5/DL envelope inserter with a small footprint up to high speed, intelligent machines for transactional mailing with barcode camera reading, management information and insert matching for marketing and financial mailings.

KAS machines offer flexibility and simplicity, being easy to operate and change over, especially for anyone used to running printing presses or print finishing equipment. Designed and manufactured by KAS Paper Systems in the UK to the highest standard means that printers can expect the durability that they are accustomed to from their heavy duty printing and finishing equipment.

KAS Mailmaster Compact

The KAS Mailmaster Compact is a cost effective 5000 DL to C4 per hour production envelope inserter with a compact footprint and at a price which makes it ideal for printers who are planning to diversify into direct mail.

It is constructed to handle large volumes but also designed for easy set up and quick changeover from one job to another, making it equally suitable for short run work. Three automatic feeders and a hand feed position are provided as standard. The prime document feeder has an integral folder. Two insert stations handle a wide variety of documents.

KAS Mailmaster Eclipse

The top of the range Mailmaster Eclipse inserts into C4/C5/DL at 8,000 envelopes per hour. It offers not only increased output but a host of other features.  These include multiple sheet feeding at maximum speed, semi-automatic job changeover, secondary channel for feeding and reading a prime document, such as a 7mm thick booklet from the side insert feeder, Datalog tracking of all prime documents and inserts  for 100% closed-loop reporting and mailing integrity.

KAS Mailwrap polywrapper

Also being demonstrated is the KAS Mailwrap polywrapper which has been developed to fill a gap in the market for printers and direct mail companies to upgrade from lower speed equipment without having to invest in high speed polywrappers at much greater cost. It handles from CD width to over A4 with a maximum speed of 6000 packs per hour.

Eddy Hagen: judging colour objectively is impossible

03 aug 2017
Categorie:

We already knew that judging colour is far from simple and that the environment plays an important role. On the Insights4pint blog Eddy Hagen talks about another factor which makes it nearly impossible to judge colour objectively. He calls it “The uncertainty principle of visual color evaluations.”
Simply said, people are so easily influenced where it concerns colour that we cannot judge it objectively without instruments. The graphic arts industry has been able to live with this problem because we have developed certified procedures to help our, often difficult, clients view colour in an objective manner.

Eddy Hagen: Kleur visueel objectief beoordelen is onmogelijk

03 aug 2017
Categorie:

Eddy noemt dat “The uncertainty principle of visual color evaluations”.

Bell and Howell Sells Sorting Business to Fluence Automation

02 aug 2017
Categorie: ,

Bell and Howell announced that it has spun off its mail-sorting business and certain parcel-labeling technologies to a new company named Fluence Automation. The newly formed company is owned by a group of investors that includes members of the Bell and Howell sorting-leadership team.

“This strategic move is part of our plan to accelerate Bell and Howell’s continued growth as we extend our capabilities in our traditional mail-production business while also expanding our industry-leading innovation in areas such as e-commerce, robotics and track-and-trace technologies,” said Dr. Ramesh Ratan, president and CEO of Bell and Howell. “This move, along with the acquisition of Sensible Technologies earlier this year, and other initiatives we are currently pursuing, means our mail-production customers can feel confident that Bell and Howell is committed to providing the products and services they rely on – now and in the future.”

As part of the transaction, Bell and Howell and Fluence Automation will remain close strategic partners in several areas. The two firms have entered into a service agreement that will allow Fluence Automation to leverage Bell and Howell’s extensive service-technician network when and where appropriate. Bell and Howell will also be licensing certain technology from Fluence Automation.

Fluence Automation will be led by Bell and Howell’s longtime VP and General Manager of Sorting Mike Swift as president and CEO. “We are excited to build upon Bell and Howell’s success in the sorting and parcel industry,” Swift said. “Our customers will continue to receive the excellent products, software and service that they are accustomed to. In the near-term, we will continue to rely upon Bell and Howell as a valued partner in many areas of our day-to-day business. Fluence Automation will focus on growth in the mail- and parcel-encoding and sorting market, leveraging our sorting-expertise team while collaborating with Bell and Howell in areas such as service support. There are many exciting, new opportunities in our sights.”

“This move is a win-win for all parties involved,” said Gregory Segall, chairman of Bell and Howell, and CEO of Versa Capital Management, LLC, whose affiliates, along with co-investor Access Value Investors, own and control Bell and Howell. “It’s good for the customers, the employees and each company. Both businesses are very healthy and on a significant growth trajectory. With this new direction, each can now focus their time, resources and development efforts to better serve their customers.”
