German newspaper publisher, Mindener Tageblatt, has streamlined production of the mobile version of its newspaper using Eversify, the mobile content publishing software from Agfa Graphics. The cloud-based solution has automated the entire production and publication process, enabling the publisher to deliver content optimized for smartphones and tablets.
Mobile requires different approach to print and web
J.C.C. Bruns-owned Mindener Tageblatt produces various versions of its newspaper, with a printed circulation of 32,000 copies and a website that gets up to 25,000 visits per day. The publisher began developing in-house a version for mobile devices, as part of its multi- channel strategy. However, the growing diversity of viewing platforms complicated production, as the processes became too complex and labor intensive.
Christoph Pepper, editor-in-chief, realized a different solution was required: “Producing a mobile newspaper is a completely different ball game. Our page layout systems are optimized for printed newspapers, not for producing dynamic content for mobile devices. We needed an automated solution that could blend XML data from our editorial systems into an optimized layout for a variety of mobile devices and operating systems.”
The Mindener Tageblatt five-step mobile publishing strategy
- Adopt ‘Responsive Design’ philosophyAll content was customized for an optimal viewing experience on all digital-display media, such as monitors, tablets or smartphones. This was crucial for making production and process structures more lean and cost-effective. The publisher also redesigned its website and related digital content according to this philosophy.
- Assess the publishing optionsMindener Tageblatt wanted to bring all versions of its ePaper together on one production platform, including the web versions. This left the publisher with two options – create its own solution or adapt its own setup. Both options would be costly, either from a capital investment or labor perspective.
Reach for the cloud
Maximize use of existing resources
Eversify integrates easily with newspaper editorial and production environments, enabling Mindener Tageblatt to make best use of its existing editing and production resources. It automatically creates appealing ePapers, which can also be edited via an easy-to-use back-office when needed. The final app presentation is created using full HTML5 functionality, making it suitable for various digital output devices.
Test the output
During the production process, Eversify can simulate how the final content will be presented on various virtual media, such as tablets or smartphones. Currently, Mindener Tageblatt isn’t using these options to produce its ePaper+, but Pepper plans to exploit it in future: “It will play an essential role when we develop additional products. It’s all part of a unified publishing workflow that combines print, digital products, and publication apps, to create a premium reading experience, whatever platform the reader is using.”
For Pepper, the partnership between Mindener Tageblatt and the Eversify team has proved very successful: “They were very professional in terms of product conception, design and support. We were able to develop our ePaper+ edition in a record time. Believe me, it doesn’t get much better than this.”
Rainer Kirschke, Business Manager Mobile Publishing for Eversify, Agfa Graphics, comments: “The software is really easy to integrate, whatever the platform. It has enabled Mindener Tageblatt to cost-effectively produce an optimized mobile version of its newspaper, and offer its mobile-device readership a highly engaging experience.”

The success of startup Build Your Own Handbag shows that you can earn money with a good idea, but it also got us thinking about a similar concept for graphic products. There is a number of examples such as personalised packaging or web2print solutions for letterhead, etc.
Something that we think is not available yet, but could potentially have a market is Make Your Own Book. By which we don´t mean writing and publishing, because there are plenty of solutions catering to the self publisher. We mean a solutions where readers choose a personalised version of an existing book. With various formats, paper and binding methods. Think of various materials for the cover, from leather to special materials such as bamboo or other fibers. The reader could create a beautiful copy for themselves or as a gift.
And yes, of course this has been done since the beginning of printing. But with the help of the internet this should be a much more available and accessible option. Good idea? Who will get this going? Let us know via rob@blokboek.com and we´ll publish your story.

New Canon press, the Océ ProStream, offers unrivalled quality and media versatility from continuous inkjet
Canon Europe, world-leader in imaging solutions, is launching the Océ ProStream, its next generation continuous feed colour inkjet press.
The ProStream combines the best features of Canon’s existing high-performance inkjet technologies with new innovations to take high-speed inkjet to the next level of colour output quality and media versatility.
This creates valuable new opportunities for many print service providers (PSPs) by enhancing their capability to deliver high-value variable content applications such as premium direct mail and marketing collateral, personalised catalogues, brochures and books.
Christian Unterberger, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President Production Printing Products at Océ explains: “The ProStream is a natural addition to Canon’s established portfolio of continuous feed inkjet solutions, meeting the needs of progressive customers who are looking for higher quality and improved media choice for sustained high-volume production.
“With this new press, customers can now confidently migrate high-value work from offset to inkjet. This will enable PSPs and brand owners to exploit the full creative potential of variable data printing to elevate print’s effectiveness within data-led multi-channel campaigns.”
With a printing width of 540 mm and maximum print speed of 80 metres per minute, the ProStream offers best-in-class productivity of up to 35 million A4 pages per month.
Excellent output quality is achieved by means of a new high-definition 1200 dpi Océ DigiDot print head, which produces sharp images with fine details, smooth greyscales, as well as large areas of solid ink coverage.
A new pigmented polymer ink set matches or exceeds offset colour gamut for high quality applications. The press also features new, non-contact flotation drying technology. This minimises physical stresses on the paper and leaves the printed image untouched until dry, enabling dense ink coverage for vibrant colour reproduction.
The ProStream incorporates Canon’s ColorGrip paper conditioning technology, ensuring optimal print quality on standard coated and uncoated offset papers from 60 to 160 gsm.
Peter Wolff, Senior Director Customer Groups Commercial Printer and Production CRD concludes: “We talk to many customers who are looking for a continuous inkjet press that combines the vibrant colours associated with offset with variable data capability on standard coated papers, allowing for cost efficient white paper solutions with fast time-to-market. With the ProStream, we can now give them that solution.”
Canon will exhibit the new ProStream press at Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne, Switzerland from 20-23 February 2017, where it will be demonstrated producing direct mail items, calendars, photo books and brochures. The press will be commercially available from summer 2017.
