The latest technology being showcased by global and regional brands will add to the industry’s growth in Africa. The SGI Dubai 2017 show would be held from January 15th to 17th 2017 at the halls 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
There are several upcoming developments in terms of malls being developed in the African region which will necessitate the requirement of digital signages. Also old equipments are slowly and steadily being phased out to usher in new machinery and with the new technology in stride the automation process is fast catching up. This growth translates into vast opportunities for printers, raw material suppliers and print equipment suppliers.
Mr. Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, Chairman of IEC said, “The printing industry is euphoric as it has witnessed a drastic change over the last few years, as technology has empowered quality and the industry has been growing exponentially from regional to international. Print is the first choice for organisations in the MENA region as it dominates the industry and continues to be potent enough to transmit a message to the end user. The benefits of print can help foster a brand apart from increasing the effectiveness of marketing efforts.”
Inkjet, laser and dot-matrix printers together form the core of major printer technologies. In the recent years the economy of Africa has witnessed a surge in investments in verticals like energy, and information and communication technology. More than 33 percent of African counties have a GDP growth rate of more than 6 percent according to the African Development Bank. This kind of growth has appealed global printer manufacturers towards Africa’s emerging economies.
Technological developments are expected to bring down the average cost per colour impression significantly and thus have been spurring demand in recent years. The printing industry is touted to consolidate its existing position as the economies of the Middle East and Africa mature to develop and sustain growth opportunities in the market.
“The printing press is regarded as one of the important inventions of all times. This has given us books, magazines and newspapers without which we would have found it a bit difficult to read and enlighten ourselves. New technologies have been boosting the process of printing, thereby helping GCC countries to expand their domestic industries. Also the increasing specialisation of the UAE’s printing sector has seen a tremendous growth in creation of new jobs. The printing industry has spiralled from a meagre amount of printers few years ago to a substantial amount of printers seen today,” said Mr. Sharif Rahman, CEO, IEC.
The SGI Dubai show is one of the most anticipated events of the year in the MENA region within the signage, digital signage, retail signage solutions, outdoor media, screen and digital printing industries.
SGI Dubai 2017 is bringing exhibitors and visitors from USA, UK, Germany, China and Japan, among others. The 20th edition of SGI Dubai is expected to receive over thousand visitors from different countries and they are set to witness the industry’s latest products and trends. This forum will also include seminars and workshops conducted by industry experts.
Sign and Graphic Imaging Dubai (SGI Dubai) is an ideal converging point where visitors and exhibitors can reach out with architects, sign makers, print and production manufacturers, media agencies, real-estate developers, brand and image consultants among others. The event is a deep-rooted 19 year old business forum which is recognised globally and constitutes workshops and seminars held by industry experts.

In her Verdigris Blog Laurel talks about Ricoh´s rapid growth in the graphic business. This growth is in step with their plans to continue their green strategy. By 2050 Ricoh intends to use only 100% recyclable materials on their digital printers.
Read more about the leadership of companies such as Ricoh and what this means for our industry on Laurel´s blog on our articles page.

With astonishing speed, Ricoh has gone from new entrant to market leader in many areas of the graphics business. It saw a three-fold increase in printing systems turnover between 2003 and 2013, and is the first digital press company to achieve certification to ISO 12647-2, the reference standard for colour quality. The company has however not forgotten its green committments or the People Planet Profit triple bottom line for social equity, economic and environmental factors. Ricoh has a goal for 2050 that 50% of all raw materials used in its digital presses and associated materials will be based on recyclates. In the UK, where one of Ricoh’s three Customer Experience Centres is located and where the company has extensive manufacturing and testing facilities, a new green consultancy service is on offer.
It is still early days but the consultancy is based on environmental impact mitigation steps Ricoh UK started taking a few years ago. Today the site is a zero waste-to-landfill site where carbon dioxide emissions are significantly down. Infrastructure accounts for 67% of the plant’s energy usage so this was the focus for the €100,000 investment which was paid back within seven months. Ricoh UK has installed high frequency lighting and uses LEDs instead of sodium lightbulbs. This has cut the lighting energy bill by some €30,000. A gas fired Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system heats water and work spaces and is helping to saved €0.5 million and over 4000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Recycling parts in its printers instead new manufacture has realised massive savings in parts costs and in Ricoh’s raw material usage.
Much of Ricoh’s Lean & Green offering is based on its Carbon Balanced Printing programme, however there is more to it. A ten step approach reengineers business processes and logistics for greater efficiency. This might be placing production machines in a more logical sequence, or storing substrates so that they are both convenient for deliveries and for use. This may all sound obvious but it is surprising how many companies fail to organise equipment and supplies logically. For organisations facing expansion, managing your space more effectively can make it easier to remain in existing premises rather than having to rent a larger facility. Based on Ricoh’s experience, around 30% more space can be gained with revamped lay outs and improved diagnostics. Another consideration is gaining an accurate idea of the overall capacity of a production plant. It’s often the case that machines can handle more work than they are getting, because the press is dictating processes, rather than processes driving the press capacity. Good process management can make an enormous difference and increase production volumes.

2016 was, as was to be expected in a drupa year, a year of big technological improvements. First of all the definitive breakthrough of production inkjet. With speeds which come close to traditional print technology, a colour range bigger than any offset printer has ever dreamt of, and the number of copies can be as few as 1, it is a logical development.
2016 also confirmed that offset is here to stay for the foreseeable future; with more automation, ready to finish prints thanks to UV LED curing and inline finishing such as coatings and foil, offset is the right choice not just for large volume packaging, but also for enhanced print work. A choice which has been made even easier with the new workflows which are independent of print technology.
Thanks to the internet workflow has become global; location, company size, actual print or digital publishing no longer matter in the execution. Multi Channel Publishing, via print/online/social media/apps, is already a standard option for many companies. This is where print and digital meet and the future is bright for both. You don´t need to be a printing giant, there are plenty of scale-able and affordable solutions to meet and beat digital.
Also in 2017 Blokboek.com will be on the lookout for technological developments and will follow and test these and report about them. One of the projects we are working on is social media publishing solutions. Our first experience with LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and ScoopIt are very positive, Google+ and Flipboard not so much as they do not generate dedicated readers for us. We will keep you up to date, also in 2017.
2017 promises to be an exciting year for technology and marketing with highlights such as the Grafische Vakbeurs in Gorinchem, Netherlands, IPEX in Birmingham, UK and FESPA Digital in Hamburg, Germany. Blokboek.com is media partner for all these shows and will keep you informed.
We wish you a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in 2017.
Daarover zullen we u begin 2017 zeker berichten.

Siegwerk’s latest generation of EB offset inks generates momentum for offset printing in flexible packaging.
Siegwerk promotes an innovative ink solution for offset printing and subsequent electron beam (EB) curing. The new technology delivers outstanding print quality and enables the reduction of operational costs for short runs.
Siegburg, Germany, December 19, 2016. Siegwerk, one of the leading global providers of printing inks for packaging applications and labels, is now offering a new ink range for offset printing, which is particularly suitable for flexible packaging. With these state-of-the-art energy curing offset ink solutions (e.g. EB 705) Siegwerk gives flexible packaging printers access to the benefits of offset printing for short print job lengths: Low cost of print form and short set-up times allowing for quicker changeovers between the print jobs.
Short time-to-market, outstanding print quality and high fastness properties, offset printing inks already do a great job in a wide range of print applications like shrink-film, wrap-around and inmould labels. Up to now, UV curing inks are successfully used in many cases. Converters who want to avoid the use of photo initiators in energy curing inks, can alternatively use electron beam (EB) curing systems to reduce the risk of potential migration problems.
Several industrial print trials on Comexi’s central impression EB offset press, called CI8, have shown, Siegwerk’s new EB technology offers an excellent print performance, low dot gain, low water dosing with less emulsification and scumming as well as fast intensity recovery after stops. The new ink technology is suitable for a variety of plastic substrates of the flexible packaging market like coex. OPP, acrylic coated PET, etc. Recently, first positive results were obtained in lamination studies with different packaging structures too.
Offset printing enables cost reduction with regard to shorter print job lengths
In many market segments there is a trend towards shorter print job lengths driven by brand owners, desiring packaging diversification and also an optimization of working capital along the value chain. Due to this, printers have to deal with frequent changes in the printed design and a varying average job lengths. “In the past, typical print run lengths for example in beverage wrap-around labels were several tens of thousands of squaremeters,” explains Dr. Stefan Busse, Regional Director Application Technology, Flexible Packaging EMEA at Siegwerk. “Today, more and more jobs are printed on wide web machines with only a few thousand squaremeters. In order to stay cost-competitive in these markets, all cost drivers have to be minimized. That’s why some of our customers are attracted by the low cost of print forms for offset printing plates.”
Siegwerk invited to supply EB offset inks for Comexi’s new CI8 press at latest Open House event
Due to the excellent print performance of the new EB ink solutions, Siegwerk has recently been invited to supply EB offset inks for Comexi’s last Open House event on December 14th in Girona (Spain) where the company was presenting its new CI8 press to a selected audience. “We are proud of the acknowledgement of our ink performance by Comexi,” says Dr. Busse. “During the last month our technical teams in Europe have made any effort in finding ways to help our customers accessing the benefits of offset printing in flexible packaging.”
For flexible materials electro beam curing, according to Siegwerk, has a number of advantages over UV curing. Faster drying times and high fastness are but two. For this reason Siegwerk developed EB705 inks. These new inks are being tested on the Comexi C18 press with materials such as coex, OPP and acrylic coated PET. The inks are already available. Read more about these EB inks in the press release below.

FESPA has launched the call for entries for its 2017 Awards, marking the start of its search for pioneering and innovative projects in the print industry.
The FESPA 2017 Awards are now officially open for entries. With 15 categories designed to celebrate the achievements and innovations across the print industry and non-printed signage industry, the FESPA Awards is the print industry’s only independent, global Awards programme to recognise outstanding contributions.
Now in its 26th year, the FESPA Awards programme is renowned for unearthing talent across all disciplines of the printing industry. Spanish print shop Taller de Serigrafia and South African-based printer Screenline are just two previous winners who credit their business growth to these Awards.
Christian M. Walter, managing director of Taller de Serigrafia stated: “I think it´s evident that there is no better publicity for a print studio, than winning a prize as prestigious as a FESPA Gold Award. Anybody who is entirely convinced to have done something extraordinary should send their submissions, as these awards are a major showcase for a printer´s work and skills.”
Likewise, Neil de Greef, managing director of Screenline commentend on his triumph: ‘Winning a FESPA Award has given our company not only the confidence and validation for our work, but it has also provided a springboard to drive further innovation within the marketplace.’
As in previous years, entrants for all categories will be required to submit their work by the 27th of January 2017. Judging will take place over the 1st and 2nd March by an independent panel of industry experts.
This differs from our previous judging process, which has always taken place alongside our FESPA exhibition. The reason behind this change, as explained by FESPA’s Head of Events, Duncan MacOwan, is to “allow the judges more time to assess the entered work, and debate the eventual winners of each category; a task which proves more challenging each year as the quality and volume of entries continues grow.”
There are 15 different categories to enter such as ‘Roll-to-Roll Printed Textile’ or ‘Point of Purchase Products’, and all categories are technique-agnostic so can be produced using screen, digital, flexo or any type, or combination, of print technique(s).
The full list of the 2017 categories is as follows:
- Point of Purchase Products: Printing on paper & board, including paper banners & backlit papers
- Point of Purchase Products: Printed on all types of plastics, including plastic banners and backlit plastic + lenticular, plastic printing in sheets, flexible or rigid

Outside of the application-led categories, there are three separate categories: Young Star, Best in Show and People’s Choice.
The Young Star award is open to an employee or student in a print related discipline aged between 16 and 25. Best in Show is decided by the judges, across all the shortlisted entries, for the piece of work that offers the most outstanding example of print. And the People’s Choice award is voted for online by the FESPA community. Voting will open on the 6th February 2016.
The FESPA 2017 Awards are open to all printers and signmakers who have produced quality projects with technical expertise relevant to the application.
Entries will be judged on technique, colour appearance, image definition, job complexity, use and creativity. The full list of awards criteria and judging deadlines can be found at www.fespaawards.com
All shortlisted entries will also be displayed at the Hamburg Messe in Hamburg during FESPA 2017, 8-12th May, and the winners will be announced in front of an elite audience of global industry experts at FESPA’s Gala Night on Wednesday 9th May at the 5* Grand Elysee Hotel in Hamburg.
