Apple finally updated their laptops. Thanks to the new processors they are, as expected, faster; the real difference, however, is in the Touch Bar. Touch Bar is a touch sensitive OLED strip which replaces the function keys. The Touch Bar adapts itself to the app being used. Apple claims this will increase productivity. This improvement is by no means as impressive as what Microsoft offers with its Surface Pro. The full Surface Pro screen is touch sensitive, like the iPad. Whether or not the new MacBooks will be able to compete does not only depend on touchability, but also on optimised apps and the desire to work with a Mac. Because, as usual, Apple wins on design. The most heard comments at introduction were “Oh, they look so good: I want one!”.

Er lijkt geen einde te komen aan de ambities van de social media giganten. Na publishing is nu educatie aan de beurt om de disrupting power van deze netwerken te ervaren. Zo geeft LinkedIn Learning gratis videotrainingen over onderwerpen die variëren van business software tot design en variabele data printing. De kwaliteit van de modules is niet altijd even hoog en er zitten redelijk wat overlappingen in, maar als je snel en gratis wilt weten hoe je van een InDesign pagina een interactieve PDF kunt maken is InLearning een goede oplossing. Gratis moet je in dit geval met een korreltje zout nemen, want hoewel de LinkedIn CEO in zijn newsletter het zijn missie en plicht vindt om ons te gratis te scholen, geven cursisten LinkedIn een schat aan Big Data over interesses en onderwerpen. En met de groeiende inkomsten uit gerichte advertenties is deze Big Data meer waard voor het bedrijf dan de kosten voor het maken van een training. There seems to be no end to the ambitions of the social media giants. After publishing it is education´s tun to experience these network´s disrupting powers. LinkedIn Learning now has free video training on subjects which vary from business software to design and variable data printing. The quality of the modules is not always very high and there is quite a bit of overlap. But, if you want quick access to how to turn an InDesign page into an interactive PDF InLearning can be a good option. You´ll have to take the word ´free´ with a grain of salt. Because although the LinkedIn CEO says it is his mission and obligation to educate is for free, the learners give LinkedIn a wealth of big data about their interests. And with the growing income from targeted advertising these big data will be much more valuable to the company than the cost of the training. Look at an example of an InLearning video via this link which gives an introduction about digital and variable data printing.

Microsoft surprised everyone yesterday. No new range of Surface laptops, but a real grown-up desktop computer with a 28″ Surface screen. The Surface Studio will, according to Microsoft, help you become the most productive and the most creative person. And indeed it is a brilliant solution, the combination of touch screen and a powerful Surface computer. For about 3,000 euros you will get a work station which can be transformed into a digital drawing board. A drawing board which makes optimum use of the 13.5 million PixelSense screen with true-to-life colours. New is also the Surface Dial, a smart way to walk through the menus without having to click through the endless pop-up menus. By simply putting the Dial on the screen and turning it you quickly go where you want to be. Unfortunately not many professional programs such as Adobe Photoshop are suitable for the Dial yet, but Microsoft is working on that.

Helaas zijn er nog niet veel professionele programma’s zoals Adobe Photoshop die gebruik kunnen maken van de Dial, maar daar wordt volgens Microsoft aan gewerkt.

IPP International Paper & Plastic, an independent trade organisation, presents the BoardBox, an inspiring and comprehensive cardboard collection. The BoardBox is a unique tool for printers, designers and brand owners. The tool can be used to make the right choice of cardboard for packaging and other applications.
The theme is ´Get the Action on Board´ and the IPP wants their customers to use the BoardBox for themselves and their clients.
