Chocolate and hazelnut packaging
Nutella and Ferrero Rocher are world famous chocolate and hazelnut brands by food manufacturer Ferrero. After processing 23,000 tons of hazelnuts a year – a quarter of production worldwide – skins and nutshells remain. Why not use this organic waste to produce the packaging. That is what the Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS) together with Stora Enso decided to research and accomplish.
The outer layer of the packaging is always of high quality paper which is suitable for printing, the inner layer is usually of lower quality fibre. PTS and Stora Enso have replaced part of the inner layer (10-20%) with nutshell and skin fibres. “The fact that we could use a new raw material in the normal board production process was a real breakthrough” says PTS´s Wolfram Dietz.
