Determining counterfeit money with your smartphone
If you would like to determine if euro banknotes are real or counterfeit, you can use the new app by De Nederlandse Bank (Dutch National Bank).
By scanning the note with the camera of your phone the app can determine if the note has the correct characteristics such as ink, watermark and hologram.
The bank says it is a helpful tool. There is only a small chance of getting a false banknote. Last year in The Netherlands only 48,700 counterfeit banknotes were intercepted, a fraction of the total amount of banknotes in circulation.
The app is available for the iPhone 5 and new Apple phones. An Android version will follow later this year.
