Generating electricity with street advertising
JCDecaux is developing sustainable electricity generating street furniture. With this furniture it contributes to a smart electricity network in Utrecht in which electric cars are used as temporary battery for energy.
The street furniture manufacturer of these energy generating bus shelters has seized the opportunity to contribute to the vehicle-to-grid system in the Lombok area in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Citizens from the Lombok area, united in Lomboxnet initiated the system and also launched a car sharing program called We Drive Solar, together with Renault. For a monthly fee, citizens and companies of the area can make use of 150 electric Renault Zoes.
By equipping the bus shelters with solar panels and recharging outlets JCDecaux can supply energy to the We Drive Solar electric cars and use the remaining energy to illuminate the shelters during the night.
