An economic and difficult to counterfeit smart label – that is what Xerox says it has developed with Printed Memory. The printed electronic label can hold up to 36 bits of data with which the authenticity and condition of a product can be proven. The origin as well as the distribution of the product can be tracked. To integrity of the product is ensured. Xerox subsidiary PARC developed the Printed Memory with Cryptographic Security. The encrypted printed code (similar to a QR code) has been added to the Printed Memory label. It can only be read by authorized personnel using a reader which interfaces with a secure smartphone application. According to Xerox the Printed Memory Cryptographic Security offers advantages compared to other methods such as invisible ink, holograms and RFID, and it is less expensive and more difficult to counterfeit because of the unique encryption.
