Paper mill Scheufelen in bankruptcy
Another German paper mill in trouble. At the end of last month we wrote about paper mill Feldmuhle in Uetersen (near Hamburg, Germany) going into bankruptcy. Now followed by the announcement of paper mill Scheufellen declaring bankruptcy. Scheufelen in Lenningen employs 340 people. Scheufelen had a turnover last year of 83 million with a production of 104,000 tons of paper. But the plant had been losing money for years and had to deal with high source material cost price. In 2016 Scheufelen was acquired by an investment consortium. The reorganisation, including freezing of wages has not been successful. Neither has focusing on the packaging market. Scheufelen mainly produced coated paper in a flooded market. The paper mill will continue for the time being. There is hope for a re-launch. They see a future in – together with Igepa – brands such as Heaven 42 (coated white paper) and packaging carton Phoenolux. Also grass paper, meant for the graphic and packaging industry, is an option for the manufacturer.
