Popular is not the same as true
During a big update a few years ago Google still assumed that a much-read article would be truthful or at least dependable. The idea was that internet users would distill the valuable and true journalism from the stream of information and not pay any attention to bogus articles. This doesn´t actually seem to be the case. Correct or not, the more spectacular news and fake news is what is being read and shared. Because of the use of certain algorithms these are the messages which pop-up first on search results and are being read more often.
Business Insider spoke to many anonymous sources within Google and they confirmed that this is one of the first revelations in the research into the fake news around the American presidential elections. Unfortunately neither the sources nor the algorithms are public, so we cannot confirm that this news is real or fake.
