Printer invests against the odds
Belgium printer Haletra, based in Houthalen-Helchteren, is planning to invest 8 million euros to double production space. Such an investment is not very usual, especially not in these times of heavy competition. “Our sector has been under a lot of pressure for years now”, says Dirk Mewissen (46), CEO of the family enterprise. “In 2007 there were 933 print shops in Belgium. 570 of these still exist. According to our branche organisation only 150 will remain”. We do not want to stall our development, adds Dieter Paredis (36). “We want to fly and be one of the top 10 sheet printers in our country.”
To reach that goal Haletra will start an ambitious investment programme from February onwards. A production hall of 2,200 m2 will be added to double the current production space. At the same time millions will be invested in newet generation print and finishing equipment, traditionally from German manufacturer Heidelberg. All this together will account for 8 million euro. “About a third of that amount is for the acquisition of ground and building, the rest is for new equipment and optimisation of our current equipment”, says Paredis.
